Most people vacationing in Maui miss the glory of Upcountry. Now, it can be a little pesky with sunshine, but it makes me love it all the more for rain and clouds and a legitimate chill in the air. Plus the rolling green slopes of Haleakala soothe you into deep breaths and peace. There are magical spots to be found, and so we I took the B. family there, twice in fact. Yep, the pesky part played out and we had rain the first time. And even though we tried hard to make it work, the rain did not enhance their portraits. There is learning to dance in the rain, and then the reality of so much rain you can’t make a clear portrait. I was so thankful they were willing to try again and we had a beautiful afternoon in Kula.
It was really so much fun to photograph this family and to get to know the kids more. We laughed a lot, played and the organic lollypops at the end of the session may have had something to do with the 7 year-olds rave reviews of “Aunty Krissy.” With their oldest entering high school next year, mom Staci is wise knowing time is only going to go faster, and cherishing the time they do have together. (Such an important time to capture through professional photography too!)
Themes run in their family, beautiful ones like, “Grace upon grace,” and “You are each other’s best friends.” (I love that and preach that to my girls too!) Their family was formed through so much grace, where ashes were exchanged for beauty, and waiting lead to the most beautiful of miracles of each one of these three children. Staci hopes “that they will never loose sight of The Lord and all his goodness.” I’m hoping that each of their portraits will be a tool for that, that these photographs that they will hold in their hands and as visual family memory markers will remind them of how loved they are, treasured, cherished, not just by mom and dad but by the Lord too.
