I’ve always wanted to go to Pe’ahi– AKA “JAWS” here on Maui. I’ve heard about the legendary waves, and I was disappointed to miss an epic swell last night but excited to venture out first thing today. I wish I could tell you who the surfers here are by name, but I can tell you they are amazing athletes. So here you go, a few of my favorite photographs from today– true feats of athleticism and courage as well as awe-inspiring waves. I now know that thunder isn’t the only sound that creates that rumble. And, as a former gymnast, I now know of something scarier than any trick on a 4″ wide, 4′ high balance beam.
If you know who these surfers might be, please comment. And let me know what you think too– any favorites?

*My first time shooting surf photography, and I loved it. Canon Mark ii 5d, 70-200mm f/2.8, no tripod– which would have been useful.

Wangdu Hovey I wish I did, but I ust have some of you paddling out. Sorry!
