Over the summer I was on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to the mainland. I read through their in-flight magazine, Hana Hou!, and I was so impressed with their photography, and then the thought passed through my mind, “I wonder how you shoot for them– that would be so cool.” And the thought was fleeting and others came in. But sometimes, even when God doesn’t seem to hear the loud, continual cries, He shows that He is indeed listening, even to the fleeting whispers, that you whisper so softly you barely remember them yourself. However, less than a week after that flight, the photo editor from the same magazine contacted me about using a photo of mine in their magazine! I was thrilled, floored at the timing, and so excited as this was a career goal. But more than that, with all that my family has been going through, and with all of God’s seeming silence, it was exhilarating to know He was listening, even to the whispers. And sometimes that is how we are to listen to Him too. (Check out 1 Kings 19:12)
As the photo editor and I talked the decision was made to do a new shoot, specific to feature the Maui Ponies business. You can read more about the shoot here. This month, December 2016, the magazine with my photo was in print. I’m so humbled to be a part of this magazine, especially that this issue is a feature on the end of sugar cane here on Maui; and humbled that God opened this opportunity for me and equipped me to be able to do it. I’m also so proud to produce work that is at a caliber that can be featured, and it feels like a meaningful pat on the back for all the work, heart, and perseverance I’ve put into this career. Who knows, maybe more commercial photography work will open up in the future. I’ll keep whispering though, talking, and listening, and we’ll see what is next…
